Sustainability
At MakeHampers, we want our gifts to feel special without leaving more of a mark on the environment than they need to. We are a small, British team, and we think about our impact in two places: how we run our office, and how we source, pack and send your hampers. Here is what we do about both.
In our office
Our own footprint is modest, and we keep it that way on purpose. The office is lit with energy-saving LED panels, and we encourage the team to walk or use public transport to and from work. Our office waste is collected and recycled by a specialist waste company rather than going to landfill.
Our hampers and packaging
We hand-pack our hampers using packaging chosen to cut down on waste. Our outer boxes are made from FSC-certified cardboard, which means at least one tree is planted for every tree used. The material that protects your gift in transit is plastic-free: a starch-based packing that is biodegradable, compostable and reusable, so you can reuse it, compost it, or simply dissolve it in water. We are phasing out wicker baskets in favour of recyclable card and paper.
Sourcing and delivery
Wherever possible, we fill our hampers with British-made food and drink. That keeps food miles down and supports British producers. Our hampers are packed and stored in facilities that run largely on renewable energy, and delivered using low-emission and electric vehicles, reducing the emissions of getting your gift to the door.
Corporate gifting
For corporate gifting and bulk orders, we encourage customers to send to one central address where they can, rather than to many separate ones. It is usually simpler to manage, and it cuts the total distance delivery vehicles have to travel.
